Performance criteria 1.1 Lead and throw are set in accordance with sheep and comb type. 1.2 Tension settings allow cutter and combs to cut wool cleanly and minimise friction. 1.3 Working surfaces and moving parts of handpiece are lubricated according to manufacturer’s specifications. 1.4 Handpiece is checked to ensure components meets safety criteria in accordance with the Shearing Handbook. Range 1.5 comb screws tight, fork yoke pins in, starting tension on. Handpiece is lubricated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Element 2 Identify and replace essential components of down-tube and the shearing handpiece affecting safety and performance. Performance criteria 2.1 Down-tube components are adjusted and lubricated to maintain operational performance. Range 2.2 Components affecting the safety and performance of the handpiece are identified in accordance with the Shearing Handbook. Range 2.3 gut, spring, short tube for drive release, spline, elbow. essential components – fork yoke, retaining bar, tension spring, tension pin, retaining spring. Worn and faulty handpiece components are identified in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Range parts requiring regular replacement – tension sleeve, tension pin, top cup, bottom cup, centre post; parts requiring periodic replacement – fork yokes, leather joint guard, back cogs, comb screws, bearings.
