Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe the processes
used for commercial bottom long line fishing; describe the construction and
care of bottom long line fishing gear; participate in the setting and hauling of
a bottom long line, and catch retrieval, on a commercial fishing vessel; and
participate in the inspection and repair of a bottom long line on a commercial
fishing vessel.

Definitions
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures that are
communicated in a verbal or written form. These requirements must include
legislative requirements and company safety procedures, and may include but are
not limited to, industry codes of practice and standards.
Participate means fulfil the normal duties expected of a deckhand on the vessel.

It is the expectation of the Primary Industry Training Organisation that candidates will
demonstrate competence while working at sea on a commercial fishing vessel
engaged in bottom long line fishing.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Describe the processes used for commercial bottom long line fishing.
Performance criteria
1.1
The description outlines bait placement requirements for efficient catching of the
target fish species.
1.2
The description outlines the fish catching gear used for bottom long line fishing,
consistent with company requirements.
1.3
The description outlines the safe use and purpose of deck equipment used
while setting or hauling a bottom long line.
Range
hauler and/or combi; random, automatic and manual baiting
equipment; seabird by-catch mitigation devices.
1.4
The description outlines the steps required to set a bottom long line, from
preparation of the bait through to having a completed set, consistent with
company requirements.
1.5
The description outlines the steps required to haul a bottom long line, from
recovery of a set bottom long line through to stowed catch and equipment,
consistent with company requirements.
1.6
The description outlines the steps required to protect the marine environment
from pollution while bottom long line fishing.
Element 2
Describe the construction and care of bottom long line fishing gear.
Performance criteria
2.1
The description outlines the importance of the proper construction and care of
bottom long line fishing gear.
2.2
The description outlines the construction of a bottom long line in terms of
suitable components, consistent with company requirements.

Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
