Definitions

Manufacturers recommendations’ refer to product information and product data
sheets provided by the manufacturer of any given product.

This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of specialist materials and their uses in forming flashings for
concrete roof tiles.
Range
galvanised steel, pre-finished steel, copper, zinc, butyl rubber.
Performance criteria
1.1
The general characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of each material as
a flashing for concrete roof tiling are described in accordance with company
requirements.
1.2
The range of flashing applications on a concrete tile roof is described for each
material in accordance with company requirements.
1.3
Roof preparation required for installation of each material to the manufacturer’s
recommendation is described in accordance with company requirements.
Element 2
Inspect the installation of specialist materials as flashings for concrete roof tiles.
Performance criteria
2.1
Visual inspection confirms that roof preparation for flashing installation meets
the manufacturer’s recommendations.
2.2
Monitoring of installation and finishing procedures adopted by the specialist
installer shows that they conform to the manufacturer’s recommendations and
the job specifications.
2.3
Visual inspection confirms that completed specialist flashing installation
complies with the job specification and manufacturer’s recommendations.
2.4
Inspection confirms that the flashing installation provides a watertight and
visually acceptable finish to the concrete tile roof in accordance with job
specifications.
2.5
Inspection of roof following specialist flashing installation identifies any tile
repair work to be completed by the tiler.

2.6
Any defects in the installation of specialist flashings are reported in writing to the
tiling supervisor, installer, main contractor, or manufacturer, in accordance with
company requirements.
Element 3
Maintain a safe working environment.
Performance criteria
3.1
Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment,
building, or plant, in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and
safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.
3.2
Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in
accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and site procedures.
Range
includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety
glasses, gloves, knee pads, high visibility clothing, safety harness.
3.3
Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are
distributed and erected, in accordance with site procedures.
3.4
Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary items in accordance with site
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
