Provision of Facilities and General Safety in the Construction Industry , 1995. These guidelines apply to all construction workplaces. They contain relevant sections of the

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and regulations, generally accepted good practice, and references to further information. They are available from the

Occupational Health and Safety Service of the Department of Labour http://www.osh.govt.nz/.

3 This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations on residential and commercial sites.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Confirm materials and availability of equipment for the application of liquid roof membrane.

Performance criteria

1.1 Job is assessed and a plan of work is drawn up in accordance with company requirements.

1.2 Materials confirmed for the job are consistent with the job specifications and manufacturer recommendations.

Range includes but is not limited to – liquid membrane, cladding, flashings, sealants, tapes, cleaners, fillers.

1.3 Equipment availability is confirmed in accordance with the job specifications.

Range includes but is not limited to

– fire extinguisher, scaffolding, ladders, tools, brushes, belt sander, airless spray units, propane cylinder and torch, angle grinder, heat gun, saws, router, pop riveter, rollers.

Element 2

Complete preparations for the application of liquid roof membrane.

Performance criteria

2.1 Fire extinguisher is located on site and workers are notified of its location, extinguisher type, and capabilities in accordance with site procedures.

2.2 Preparation of site is in accordance with company requirements and job specifications.

Range area cleaned with blower or vacuum, moisture content of substrate within accepted parameters, ambient temperature within manufacturer recommendations.

Element 3

Any defects in substrate are identified and rectified and lap rebates routed, where required, in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Apply liquid roof membrane.

Performance criteria

3.1 Membrane is removed, where required, in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

3.2 Application sequence of membrane is completed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and job specifications.

Range prime if required, measure and pre-cut materials, set grid layout, apply corner under tape, apply substrate joint tape, position and spot tack sheets.

3.3

Element 4

Liquid membrane is applied in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Complete and finish liquid roof membrane.

Performance criteria

4.1 Membrane is rolled to remove air in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

4.2 Membrane is applied over flashings in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Element 5

Maintain a safe working environment.

Performance criteria

5.1 Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment, building, or plant in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.

5.2 Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and site procedures.

Range includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety glasses, gloves, knee pads, safety harness.

5.3 Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are distributed and erected in accordance with site procedures.

5.4 Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary equipment in accordance with company requirements.

5.5 Availability of site-specific safety plan is confirmed.

Range safety plan may include but is not limited to – hazard identification, working at height, securing lose material, material safety data.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
