Manufacturer recommendations – refer to product information and product data
sheets provided by the manufacturer of any given product.
Health and safety in employment guidelines – refer to the Guidelines for the
Provision of Facilities and General Safety in the Construction Industry, 1995. These
guidelines apply to all construction workplaces. They contain relevant sections of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 and regulations, generally accepted good
practice, and references to further information. They are available from the
Occupational Health and Safety Service of the Department of Labour

This unit standard applies to both new roof and re-roofing installations on residential
and commercial sites.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Confirm materials and availability of equipment for installation of roof membrane.
Performance criteria
1.1
Job is assessed and a plan of work is drawn up in accordance with company
requirements.
1.2
Materials confirmed for the job are consistent with the job specifications and
manufacturer recommendations.
Range
1.3
includes but is not limited to – membrane, cladding, flashings,
sealants, tapes, cleaners, fillers.
Equipment availability is confirmed in accordance with job specifications.
Range
includes but is not limited to – fire extinguisher, scaffolding,
ladders, tools, brushes, belt sander, airless spray units, propane
cylinder and torch, angle grinder, heat gun, saws, router, pop
riveter, rollers.
Element 2
Complete preparations for the installation of roof membrane.
Performance criteria
2.1
An on-site dangerous goods store is established, where required, and
notification, people, and goods controls are established in accordance with
health and safety in employment guidelines and site procedures.
2.2
Fire extinguisher is located on site and workers are notified of its location and
extinguisher type and capabilities in accordance with site procedures.

2.3
Area is prepared in accordance with company requirements.
Range
area cleaned with blower or vacuum, moisture content of substrate
within accepted parameters, ambient temperature within
manufacturer recommendations.
2.4
Any defects in substrate are identified and rectified and lap rebates routed,
where required, in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
2.5
Roof vents are installed, where required, in accordance with job specifications
and manufacturer recommendations.
Element 3
Carry out installation of roof membrane.
Performance criteria
3.1
Membrane is unrolled to relax and relieve stress in accordance with
manufacturer recommendations, and cut to required size in accordance with job
specifications.
3.2
Membrane is installed sequentially in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations.
Range
3.3
primer where required, grid layout set, corner under tape applied,
sheets positioned and spot tacked, material folded back in
sequence to mask laps.
Adhesive and substrate joint tape are applied and sheets are laid from centre to
outside without stretching or forcing in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations.
Element 4
Complete and finish roof membrane.
Performance criteria
4.1
Laid sheets are swept and rolled to remove air in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations.
4.2
Laps are cleaned with solvent, and lap tape and adhesives are applied in
accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
4.3
Laps are rolled and applied over flashings in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations.
4.4
Roof is rolled in its entirety in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Element 5
Maintain a safe working environment.
Performance criteria
5.1
Work practices are carried out without injury to people or damage to equipment,
building, or plant in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes, health and
safety in employment guidelines, and company requirements.
5.2
Personal protective equipment for the task at hand is selected and worn in
accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
Range
includes but is not limited to – hard hat, sunblock, ear muffs, safety
glasses, gloves, knee pads, high-visibility clothing, safety harness.
5.3
Work area is cordoned off and safety notices and notification of work signs are
distributed and erected in accordance with site procedures.
5.4
Work area is kept clear of debris and unnecessary equipment in accordance
with company requirements.
5.5
Availability of site-specific safety plan is confirmed.
Range
safety plan may include but is not limited to – hazard identification,
working at height, securing lose material, material safety data.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
