Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and describe
processes and machinery used for structuring velour for non-woven textiles;
prepare and operate machines to produce structured velour for non-woven
textiles; identify and correct machine malfunctions and deviations from
product quality; and clean machines and maintain cleanliness in work areas
and machinery.

Element 1
Identify and describe processes and machinery used for structuring velour for non-woven
textiles.
Performance criteria
1.1
Process line sections are identified and described in terms of their function and
operation.
1.2
The components of each machine are identified and described in terms of their
function and operation.
1.3
The key features of the machines used are identified and described in terms of
effects on the product being produced.
Element 2
Prepare and operate machines to produce structured velour for non-woven textiles.
Performance criteria
2.1
Machinery is prepared for operation in accordance with workplace procedures
and the production batch card.
Range

Start-up sequences are followed in accordance with machine requirements.
2.3
Textile from the mechanical needled process is introduced to the entry section
for the structuring operation in accordance with workplace practice.

Product and machinery are monitored during processing and adjustments are
made, if required, to optimise production and maintain quality standards.

Element 3
Identify and correct machine malfunctions and deviations from product quality.
Performance criteria
3.1
Deviations that affect quality are identified, the cause established, and the
problem rectified in accordance with workplace practices.
Range
3.2
may include but not limited to – feed roll unwinding tension
(looping of material).
Machine malfunctions are identified and corrective action is taken in accordance
with workplace practice.
Range
may include but not limited to – finished roll take-up and
alignment, unexplained noise.
Element 4
Clean machines and maintain cleanliness in work areas and machinery.
Performance criteria
4.1
Machines are cleaned at the end of a batch in accordance with plant safety
procedures.
4.2
Cleanliness is maintained in work areas and machinery throughout the process
in accordance with workplace procedures.
4.3
The main processing section is cleared of waste fibre in accordance with
workplace procedures.
4.4
Fabric waste is collected and sorted for recycling in accordance with workplace
procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
