Explanatory notes

1 Maaga variations are acceptable in meeting the requirements of this unit standard.

Endorsement of village variations may be conducted by pulotu.

2 Definitions

Fakaholoaga refers to the process by which something is learnt or knowledge is transmitted;

Maaga is any one of the 14 villages that the learner identifies with through either matrilineal or patrilineal lines, or self-identifies through acceptable fakaholoaga;

Pulotu refers to Niue village or community recognised and/or appointed experts.

3 Observation of the Niue ceremonies may be through attendance at actual ceremonies or through use of media.

4 Evidence requirements for assessment against this unit standard are for three different traditional ceremonies which may include but are not limited to

– first and twenty-first birthdays, religious holidays, weddings, funerals.

1.1 Traditional Niue ceremonies are identified and explained in terms of history, original purposes, and aspects of practice.

Range may include but are not limited to – venue, layout, preparation, participants, roles and responsibilities, proceedings, protocols, gifts; evidence of three is required for each ceremony.

2.2 Changes to the practice of traditional Niue ceremonies are explained in terms of differing community needs.
