Classification Water Industry > Field Hydrology Available grade Achieved Entry information Recommended skills and knowledge It is recommended that candidates complete Unit 22800 Operate and maintain hydrometric stations, before completing this unit standard. Explanatory notes 1 Workplace health and safety Codes of Practice (COP) must be observed in all tasks relevant to this unit standard. 2 The installation of a station must be planned and designed in accordance with National Environmental Monitoring Standards (NEMS) and other relevant organisational procedures. The complete list of NEMS can be found on the Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) website http://www.lawa.org.nz. 3 Must comply with relevant legislation and regulations. 4 The hydrometric station must include one of each: water level and rainfall, and must be of a scale that requires design and planning. The degree of design and planning required must, as a minimum, reflect the credit value of the unit standard. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Scope and design a hydrometric station in accordance with organisational procedures and regulatory requirements. Range 1.3 must include – structures, instrumentation. Consult where required, draft the design, and prepare financial estimates. Range 1.6 must include - access, hazards, communications, power availability. Evaluate options for the selected site, taking into account purpose, requirements and budget. Range 1.5 must include - catchment hydrology, river morphology, and access permissions, as applicable. Investigate site conditions, and record relevant measurements and characteristics. Range 1.4 28801 version 1 Page 2 of 3 consultation may include but is not limited to - local authorities, engineers, managers, land owners and occupiers, iwi authorities and stakeholders. Gain approval and finalise the design and location. Outcome 2 Plan the installation of a hydrometric station in accordance with the design. Evidence requirements 2.1 Develop an installation plan. 2.2 Develop a project health and safety plan as per organisational procedures. 2.3 Consult where required and complete plans. Outcome 3 Install a hydrometric station according to the design and plan. Evidence requirements 3.1 Consult the design and plans for the installation of the station. 3.2 Source materials, test instrumentation and allocate resources as required. 3.3 Manage the installation of the station. 3.4 Commission the station. 3.5 Compile station metadata and file according to organisational procedures.
