People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of setting up and operating fixed joinery machines for laminated fabrication; set up specialist machines; operate specialist machines; and maintain specialist machines used to produce high-pressure laminate benchtops. Classification Joinery > Joinery Operational Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 All workplace practices must comply with current legislation, codes of practice, and documented site safety procedures for personal, product, and worksite safety. 2 Legislation and regulations relevant to this unit standard include but are not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Health and Safety in Employment Regulations 1995. 3 Specialist machines include – laminate forming machine, nip roller, heated press, horizontal sander, glue spreader Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of setting up and operating fixed joinery machines for laminated fabrication. Evidence requirements 1.1 The process for setting up a fixed joinery machine is identified and described in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and workplace practices. 1.2 The process for making jigs and templates is selected and described in accordance with given job specifications and workplace practices. Range evidence is required of three different examples. The process for machining material for laminated fabrication is described in accordance with given job specifications and workplace practices. Range evidence is required of three different examples of machined material. Outcome 2 Set up specialist machines used to produce high-pressure laminate benchtops. Evidence requirements 2.1 Required jigs and templates are made to meet job specifications. 2.2 Machines are set up in accordance with legislation and manufacturer’s specifications. Outcome 3 Operate specialist machines used to produce high pressure laminate benchtops. Evidence requirements 3.1 Required material is machined to meet job specifications. 3.2 Machines are operated in accordance with job specifications and workplace practice. 3.3 Machine operation is monitored to ensure continuity of process in accordance with workplace practice. 3.4 Required jigs and templates are used to guide the machine operation in accordance with the job specifications. 3.5 Any sub-standard materials are identified, rejected, and reported in accordance with workplace practice. Outcome 4 Maintain specialist machines used to produce high pressure laminate benchtops. Evidence requirements 4.1 Cutting edges are maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. 4.2 Machines are maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
