NZQA registered unit standard 28042 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Investigate and present comprehensive findings on Cook Islands’ traditional knowledge and practice within the island Level 3 Credits 8 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to plan for and conduct an investigation, and present comprehensive findings on selected Cook Islands’ traditional knowledge and practice within the island. Classification Pacific Studies> Cook Islands Tradition and Culture Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Comprehensive refers to findings that have depth and breadth. Traditional knowledge and culture refers to knowledge and culture prior to the introduction of Christianity in the islands. Selected means selected by the candidate. 2 Cook Islands’ traditional knowledge and culture for this standard involves one of: investiture of an Ariki (paramount chief) or Mataiapo (chief), or welcoming of visitors, or historic places. 3 The comprehensive findings should explain the origin and purpose of the traditional knowledge and culture when known. 4 The presentation of the comprehensive findings can be in any form (e.g. power point, speech, slides) that allows clear communication of the findings. 5 It is expected that the candidate will know who the audience is and will tailor the presentation to that audience. 6 It is recommended that evidence for assessment against this standard be in Cook Islands’ Māori or an island dialect in order to accurately represent the selected traditional knowledge and practice. 7 The introduction and conclusion of the presentation (e.g. chant, bible verses, poem, proverbs etc) are relevant to the selected topic. Such values may include but are not limited to – ‘akangāteitei (respect), tuatua tika (honesty), tiratiratū (integrity), tuku’anga tika tau (fairness), akakoromaki (tolerance), inangaro (love), apai tu’anga (fulfilment of mutual obligations), mana and takinga meitaki (compassion). 9 This unit standard links into the Cook Islands’ Curriculum (Secondary Level 8). 10 People gaining credit for this unit standard may not also gain credit for Unit 17164, Draw a conclusion after investigating an hypothesis on an aspect of Pacific indigenous knowledge; or Unit 26540, Communicate comprehensive understanding of an aspect of Pacific culture through a planned presentation with consultation. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Plan for and conduct an investigation into selected Cook Islands’ traditional knowledge and practice within the island. Evidence requirements 1.1 The procedures and resources for the investigation are included in the plan. Range 1.2 procedures and resources include but are not limited to – consultation (with orators, traditional leaders); accessing reference documents; how information relevant to the investigation is collected, recorded and presented; resources required for the presentation. The investigation is conducted according to the plan. Outcome 2 Present comprehensive findings on the selected Cook Islands’ traditional knowledge and practice within the island. Evidence requirements 2.1 The presentation is logically structured, clear, and understandable with an introduction and conclusion. 2.2 The presentation is appropriate to the audience.
