People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify and describe base and nonferrous metals; and separate and ready nonferrous metals for processing. (ISRI) available at http://www.isri.org applies to this unit standard. 2 All work practices must comply with: Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Resource Management Act 1991. 3 Hazard controls, safety procedures, and personal protective equipment must be used throughout operations in accordance with company procedures. 4 Definition Company procedures mean the documented methods for performing work activities and include health and safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Identify and describe base metals. Evidence requirements 2.1 Nonferrous metals are identified and their grades are described in accordance with company procedures. Range 2.2 thirteen grades. Nonferrous metals received for recycling as part of a manufactured product are identified and recycling requirements are described in accordance with company procedures. Range products may include but are not limited to – battery, radiator, covered electrical wiring, circuit board, electric motor, electronic goods. Outcome 3 Separate and ready nonferrous metals for processing. Range aluminium, copper, gunmetal, brass, lead, stainless, swarf. Evidence requirements 3.1 Nonferrous metals are separated from mixed scrap received at a yard in accordance with company procedures. 3.2 Separation ensures that company grading requirements are met. Range 3.3 grading requirements may include but are not limited to – allowable degrees of contamination. Separated metals are prepared for processing in accordance with company procedures.
