Classification Agriculture > Sheep Farming Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Animal Welfare Act 1999, and their subsequent amendments. 2 Performance of all aspects of this unit standard must comply with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (2010), Animal Welfare (Sheep and Beef Cattle) Code of Welfare 2010, and its subsequent amendments, available at http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/animal-welfare/codes/sheep-beef-cattle. 3 Range For the purposes of assessment, the candidate is not required to set up and sharpen shearing combs and cutters. 4 Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or written instructions to staff and contractor’s on policies and procedures for shearing operations. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Dag sheep with prepared equipment. Range one of – machine, blade. Evidence requirements 1.1 Sheep are caught and held securely in accordance with workplace procedures and the Animal Welfare (Sheep and Beef Cattle) Code of Welfare 2010. 1.2 All dags and stained wool are removed in accordance with workplace procedures. 1.3 The sheep are dagged without injury to self or sheep. Range minimum of two of the following methods – half belly, full belly, ring crutch, full crutch, eye wigged. Evidence requirements 2.1 The sheep are checked for pizzle rot and wool blindness and action is taken in each case in accordance with workplace procedures. 2.2 The sheep are crutched without injury to self or sheep, and all dags and dirty wool are removed in accordance with workplace procedures.
