Candidates must demonstrate competency in the context of a commercial business
operation under normal working conditions.

In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be
evidence of a learners’ thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good
understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they
have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the
different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident
that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour.

Evidence requirements

Describes the process and requirements for educating, and monitoring fitness
and wellbeing of standardbred horses.
1.2
Describes the activities a standardbred horse is likely to encounter in day-to-day
stable life.

grooming, gearing up.
1.3
Describes the procedures for educating a standardbred horse to accept
mouthing gear, short and long reins, and the psychological requirements of a
horse when training.
Range:
may include but is not limited to - positive reinforcement, taking
into account horse’s attention span.
1.4
Describes the requirements for introducing and educating a standardbred horse
to the sulky and to being driven.
1.5
Describes the procedures for educating a standardbred horse to gait, and
application of associated equipment.
1.6
Describes the procedures for training a standardbred horse to a stage suitable
for placing in a harness racing stable.
