This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
monitor the health, feeding and environment of standardbred
horses in training in a harness racing industry context.
People will be working under broad guidance with full
responsibility for their work outcomes.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Meet the health requirements of standardbred horses in training.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Monitors horses’ health and wellbeing, and takes appropriate action in the event
of ill health or injury.
1.2
Implements and monitors a preventative health programme.
Range
may include but is not limited to - vaccinations, internal and
external parasite control.
1.3
Implements and monitors a programme for foot care including foot trimming and
replacing shoes.
1.4
Recognises action faults and identifies solutions for correction.

evidence is required for at least four action faults and solutions.
Identifies vices and behavioural problems relevant to horses in confined
situations, and implements and monitors solutions.
Outcome 2
Prepare, implement, and monitor a feeding plan for standardbred horses in training.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Formulates a balanced ration to meet the horse’s nutritional requirements
consistent with age, work levels, individual behavioural characteristics, and
availability of pasture.
2.2
Monitors and implements solutions for feeding problems.
2.3
Takes into consideration horse’s behavioural characteristics when feeding in the
paddock and in confined situations.
Range
may include but is not limited to - small stomach, continually
grazes for significant portion of day, high roughage intake and
head down when naturally feeding.
Outcome 3
Maintain a safe working environment where standardbred horses in training are confined,
and monitor the supply of consumables.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Manages the presentation and safety of the work environment and
surroundings.
3.2
Manages the safe and efficient operation of property equipment and fixtures,
and racing equipment.
3.3
Monitors and maintains the supply of consumables, including feed and bedding.

NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

applies to those standards.
