Classification Fitness > Group Fitness Instruction Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Exercise techniques refer to how exercise tasks are done, including the form the body takes when doing exercises. Choreography refers to how a series of exercises are performed and linked together to create an exercise routine. 2 Facility policy and procedure refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at a fitness facility. 3 All activities must be consistent with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 4 The candidate must be assessed instructing a class of at least five participants. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the basic exercise techniques and related progressions, choreographic progressions and screening used in Step classes. Range may include but is not limited to – step, tap, knee lift, leg curl, lateral leg, march, kick, push ups, abdominal exercises. Evidence requirements 1.1 The basic exercise techniques used in Step classes are described in terms of the muscle groups used, and the placement, path and alignment of body parts. Range 1.3 two options per technique. Choreographic progressions are described in accordance with the class plan. Methods with which to screen participants, and contra-indications to look for are implemented according to the facility policy and procedure. Range pre-exercise screen. Outcome 2 Instruct a Step class. Evidence requirements 2.1 The basic warm up techniques used in Step classes are described and demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.2 Technique correction is communicated and safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.3 heels on the step, entire foot on step, foot alignment, knees over toes, upright posture. Step exercise techniques are safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.4 may include but is not limited to – on the floor, step touching, double step touch, hamstring curls, walking back and forward, move to warm up with bench, stepping up and down. physical execution, flow of movement, tempo; techniques demonstrated may include but are not limited to – step, tap, knee lift, leg curl, lateral leg, march, kick, pushups, abdominal exercise, appropriate warm up exercise (dynamic stretch or preparatory movement); for each technique – a minimum of two exercise progressions, one static stretch. Motivational instruction is safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with the class plan.
