NZQA registered unit standard 27712 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Instruct a Free weights class Level 3 Credits 7 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the basic exercise techniques and related progressions, preparatory movements and stretches used in Free weights classes, and instruct a Free weights class. Classification Fitness > Group Fitness Instruction Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definitions Exercise Technique is how an exercise task is done, including the form the body takes when doing that exercise. Free weights or Pump refers to a pre-choreographed or freestyle group fitness class using weights or other forms of resistance. 2 Facility policy and procedure refers to the operations manual or documented normal operating procedures at a fitness facility. 3 All activities must be consistent with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. 4 The candidate must be assessed instructing a class of at least five participants. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the basic exercise techniques and related progressions, preparatory movements and stretches used in Free weights classes. Range must include but is not limited to – two lower limb exercises, two exercises that work the chest, two exercises that work the back, one exercise that works the shoulders, one exercise that works the biceps, one exercise that works the triceps, two abdominal exercises. Evidence requirements 1.1 The basic exercise techniques used in free weights classes are described in terms of the muscle groups used, the key joints involved and the placement, path and alignment of body parts. Range 1.3 two examples per technique. Warm up techniques to prepare muscles for exercise and stretches appropriate for relaxing muscles for free-weight techniques are described and demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Free weight equipment usage is described and safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with facility policy and procedure. Range preparatory stage in planning, start of class, ongoing monitoring. Outcome 2 Instruct a Free weights class. Evidence requirements 2.1 Pump exercise techniques are demonstrated safely and effectively in accordance with the class plan. Range 2.2 techniques include – physical execution, flow of movement, tempo, three teaching points; techniques demonstrated must include but not limited to – two lower limb exercises, two exercises that work the chest, two exercises that work the back, one exercise that works the shoulders, one exercise that works the biceps, one exercise that works the triceps, two abdominal exercises. Load requirements when warming up are described and safely and effectively demonstrated through instruction in accordance with the class plan. Range preparing the body but not overloading the body. 2.3 Fatigue levels are monitored and responded to during class by providing information of load requirement to suit the target muscle in accordance with the class plan. 2.4 Grip techniques are safely and effectively demonstrated in accordance with the class plan. Range may include but is not limited to – relaxed grip not tense, shoulder width grip with bicep curl, thumb to thumb with upright row, resting the bar on trapezius in squats, shoulder press hands above elbows, triceps skull crusher - hands above shoulders, pronated, supinated or neutral grips.
