Purpose This unit standard is for people who are currently working, or who intend to work, in the food industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe work practices and procedures while cleaning containers; prepare to, and clean containers using the food container washing system; and shut down and clean the food container washing system.

3 Definitions

Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes, and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications; documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.

Container washing system includes but is not limited to fixed and portable systems using sterilised water, steam and sanitising agents.

Services include but are not limited to

– power, steam, fresh water.

Clothing refers to safety, protective: gloves, face masks, goggles, overalls, sleeve protectors, wet weather gear, safety shoes, boots.

Containers refers to returnable or non-returnable containers that are cleaned or rinsed prior to filling, including but not limited to

– cans, glass or PET bottle, jars.

4 Competence is to be demonstrated on at least three occasions of using a food container washing system

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Use safe work practices and procedures while cleaning containers.

Performance criteria

1.1 Correct clothing protects personnel and product and conforms to company and legislative requirements.

1.2 Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with company and legislative requirements.

Range hazards

– to personnel, product, plant; caused by personnel, equipment, environment.

Element 2

Documentation is completed in accordance with organisational procedures.

Prepare to clean food containers using the container washing system.

Performance criteria

2.1 Equipment is prepared in accordance with organisational procedures.

Range includes but is not limited to – available, fully operational, within timeframe.

2.2 Services are confirmed ready for operation in accordance with company organisational procedures.

2.3 Correct containers are confirmed ready and available to meet the scheduled production.

Container washing equipment is operated in accordance with organisational procedures.

Element 4

Shut down and clean the food container washing system.

Performance criteria

4.1 Container washing equipment is shut down and cleaned in accordance with organisational procedures.

Range includes but is not limited to

– sequence, timeframe, cleanliness, safety.

4.2 Equipment is operational, and ready for next user.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The

AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
