Purpose
This unit standard is for people who are currently working in the food
processing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: use safe work practices
and procedures while forming product packaging; prepare to, and form
product packaging using automated equipment; and shut down and clean
package-forming equipment.

Definitions
Organisational procedures refer to documents that include: worksite rules, codes,
and practices; equipment operating instructions; production specifications;
documented quality management systems; and health and safety requirements.
Equipment includes package forming equipment, and may include but is not limited
to – package coding and counting equipment, metal detection equipment, weighing
equipment.
Materials may include but are not limited to – corrugated board, fibre board, cartons,
boxes, sealants, pouches, cartettes, inners, shippers, pallets, inserts.

Competence is to be demonstrated on at least three occasions of forming packaging
for food and related products using automated equipment.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Use safe work practices and procedures while forming product packaging.
Performance criteria
1.1
Correct clothing protects personnel and product and conforms to company and
legislative requirements.
1.2
Work environment is clean and free from hazards in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Range
1.3

Process documentation is completed in accordance with organisational
procedures.
Element 2
Prepare to form product packaging using automated equipment.
Performance criteria
2.1
Product packaging equipment is set up in accordance with organisational
procedures.
Range
requirements include but are not limited to – fully operational,
timely, safe, loaded, optimises production, minimises potential
jamming and damage to equipment.

Materials for packaging are prepared in accordance with organisational
procedures.
Range
include but are not limited to – sealant, quantity, timing,
accessibility.
Element 3
Form product packaging using automated equipment.
Performance criteria
3.1
Product packaging is produced in accordance with organisational procedures.
Range
3.2
includes but is not limited to – shape, product identification
positioning, clean, changeovers, wastage.
Material supply is maintained in accordance with organisational procedures.
Element 4
Shut down and clean package-forming equipment.
Performance criteria
4.1
Equipment is shut down in correct sequence in accordance with production
specifications within agreed timeframe.
4.2
Package-forming equipment is shut down and cleaned in accordance with
organisational procedures.
Range
requirements include but are not limited to – contaminant-free,
ready for next user, within agreed timeframe;
contaminants – may include residues of packaging, chemicals,
glue.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
