People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe
purpose of splitting machinery; set up splitting machine; and
produce split work to specified industry performance and
work place quality standards. This unit standard is for those
working in the footwear or allied trades as a production
operative operating splitting machinery.

moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by Competenz.
special notes:
Specified industry performance is 55% BSI performance or
equivalent. BSI Performance is the British Standards
Institute internationally recognised performance system
(BS3138) where 100% is the standard expected from a
competent fully qualified performer using the correct
methods and taking the allowed rest, working briskly and as
though on an incentive. Other comparable rating or
performance systems such as the 60/80 system are
acceptable, with the appropriate performance adjustment.
Company safety requirements conform to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992.

2.1
Top feed is selected according to job instructions and product specifications.

2.2
The machine is set up and adjusted to produce split material of a specified
thickness.
2.3
Settings are tested for compliance with product specifications.
2.4
Blade is sharpened in accordance with company practice and manufacturer's
recommendations.
