People credited with this unit standard are able to describe
and set up an edge trimming machine; and perform edge
trimming operation on soles to industry specified
performance and company quality standards.

special notes:
Specified industry performance is 55% BSI performance or
equivalent. BSI performance is the British Standards
Institute internationally recognised performance system
(BS3138) where 100% is the standard expected from a
competent fully qualified performer using the correct
methods and taking the allowed rest, working briskly, and as
though on an incentive. Other comparable rating or
performance systems such as the 60/80 system are
acceptable, with the appropriate performance adjustment.
Company safety requirements conform to the Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992.
Edge trimming covered in this unit standard refers to the
operations carried out in the Bottom Stock Department to
pre-finished soles, prior to sole being attached to shoe.

Machine parts are identified and described in terms of function and operation.
Range:

Machine is set up, tested, and adjusted to meet product specification and work
ticket requirements.
Range:

Selected cutter and/or stone matches product specification and work ticket
requirements.

Worn and damaged cutter and/or stone are identified, and replaced or reported
according to company requirement and practice.

Cutters are sharpened according to company requirements and practice.
