introductory levels of plant identification and classification be
developed before seeking credit for this unit standard.

element 1
Identify and describe features of 10 plant families in horticulture.
Range:
families must include 8 of the following: Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae,
Myrtaceae, Proteaceae, Lamiaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Orchidaceae, Poaceae,
Ranunculaceae, Ericacae, Amaryllidaceae, Cupressaceae, Brassicaceae,
Taxadiaceae, Fogaceae, Solanaceae, Pinaceae, Liliaceae, Magnoliaceae.
performance criteria
1.1
Vegetative characteristics are defined for each of the families selected.
Range:
1.2
leaf shapes, leaf arrangements, root characteristics, shoot
characteristics.
Flower and fruit characteristics are defined for each of the families selected.
Range:
flower structures, inflorescence structures, floral formulas, fruit
structures.

Identify plants in horticulture.

2.1
Application of knowledge of plant family characteristics identifies plants in
horticulture.
Range:
vegetative, flower, and fruit.
2.2
Application of knowledge of simple plant classification keys identifies plants in
horticulture.
2.3
Botanical descriptions used for plants identified conform to accepted industry
standards, and are applied in accordance with the requirements of those
standards.
