threshold levels
Level
4
Credits

Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in floriculture. People
credited with this unit standard are able to: recognise named
pests, diseases, and beneficial predatory or parasitic
organisms; monitor organism numbers; and select
agrichemicals to rectify an imbalance in the pest-to-predator or
-parasite ratio.
Classification
Horticulture > Floriculture
Available grade

Explanatory notes
Workplace procedures mean work practice guidelines which meet the requirements of the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, other regulatory requirements, and their
subsequent amendments.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Recognise named pests, diseases, and beneficial predatory or parasitic organisms.
Range
at least four pests, four diseases, and three beneficial organisms pertinent to a
floricultural crop familiar to the candidate.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Named pests that could affect a floriculture crop, and beneficial organisms that
could predate or parasitise them are recognised at different stages of their life
cycle.
1.2
The life cycles of pest and beneficial organisms of a floriculture crop are
described.
Range
1.3
four pests and two beneficial organisms.
Signs or symptoms of four diseases of a floriculture crop are recognised, and
the diseases are named at different stages of its life cycle.

Outcome 2
Monitor organism numbers.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Random samples or leaves are examined, and specific species of pest and
predator or parasite are counted and, as required by workplace procedures, it is
reported when specific pest numbers are reached or the pest-to-predator or parasite ratio slips beyond a stated point.
2.2
Pheromone or sticky traps are monitored and cleaned in accordance with
workplace procedures, and it is recorded and reported when a threshold
number of specific insects are caught.
2.3
Disease signs or symptoms are counted on random plants, and are reported
when numbers reach a stated threshold level.
Outcome 3
Select agrichemicals to rectify an imbalance in the pest-to-predator or -parasite ratio.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Agrichemicals injurious to named beneficial insects are recognised, and
alternatives, non injurious to beneficial insects, are identified.
3.2
Agrichemicals, application rates, and timing are identified to redress the balance
between pests and parasites or predators, or to reduce any potential disease
problem.

This CMR can be accessed at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/search/index.do.
Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
