People credited with this unit standard are able to: plan the
surface supply dive operation; demonstrate supervising
skills; apply technical knowledge to supervise the surface
supply dive operation; supervise first aid requirements of
operation; respond to emergency situations; and supervise
post dive procedures.
entry information:
Prerequisites: Unit 8589, Supervise self contained
underwater diving apparatus (SCUBA) dive operations; Unit
4417, Dive with surface supplied air equipment; or
demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Industry
supervisors to demonstrate 25 logged surface supply dives.
accreditation option:
Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry.
moderation option:
A centrally established and directed national moderation
system has been set up by the Dive Industry Training
Organisation.

Industry technical and safety criteria refer to the training
manuals and/or codes of practice of the training
agencies approved by the Dive Industry Training
Organisation.

All workplace diving practice must comply with the
requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment
Act, 1992 (HSE) and subsequent regulations relating to
Occupational Diving. All practice must also comply with
Accident Rehabilitation and Compensation Insurance
Act, 1992 (ARCI) and Occupational Safety and Health
(OSH) guidelines.

Dynamically Positioned vessels facilitates supervision from such vessels.

Familiarity with all the symptoms of decompression sickness and other
pressure related ailments allows therapeutic treatments to be initiated.
4.2
Knowledge of pressure related ailments ensures communication with diving
doctors.

Advice given by diving doctor is assessed in relation to the circumstances of the
situation requiring first aid intervention.
4.4
Incidents requiring first aid treatment are managed to industry technical and
