Explanatory notes 1 Respect for ownership of original ideas and cultural sensitivity underpins the learning and teaching in this unit standard. 2 Discussing dance critically in this unit standard refers to the experience of viewing, reflecting upon, and responding to various forms of dance. Viewing may include live performance, video or film of established choreographers, and quality in-class presentations. 3 The minimum subject material for this unit standard is two events, with the processes and outcomes repeated in the two events. An event is a performing arts presentation with a major dance component. However, candidates are encouraged to widen their viewing experience beyond this requirement. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Plan to critically view dance. Evidence requirements 1.1 The dance event is identified with relation to particular distinguishing features. 1.2 There is evidence of a planning process. Evidence requirements 2.1 Recording of dance information focuses on the essential detail of the dance performance. 2.2 Recording of dance detail demonstrates ability to identify dance features. Range theme, style, choreographic structure, design, use of the elements of dance (space, time, dynamic), movement vocabulary, individual performances(s). Outcome 3 Sort and examine critical dance viewing detail. Evidence requirements 3.1 Examination of the development of an idea in each dance work demonstrates the ability to observe and identify the presentation of a theme. 3.2 Examination of design features in each dance work shows appreciation of the way in which design enhances the dance work. 3.3 Examination of the use of dance vocabulary in each dance work demonstrates appreciation of the way in which the vocabulary communicates the idea of the dance work. 3.4 Examination of the choreographic structure of each dance work demonstrates appreciation of choreographic organisation. 3.5 Examination of an individual performance within each dance work demonstrates appreciation of individual artistry. 3.6 Examination of the use of the elements of dance (space, time, dynamic) in each dance work demonstrates an appreciation of the limitations and potential of the dance setting.
