Special notes 1 Independent operator, in the context of the beauty therapy industry and for the purposes of this unit standard, means someone who performs beauty services as a self manager, without supervision and in a commercially viable time-frame. 2 Enterprise requirements, for the purposes of this unit standard, refers to any policies, procedures, and requirements of the company and/or workplace involved, and any ethical codes of relevant professional management, which collectively provide a standard that applies to all competent performances in this unit standard. It is assumed that such enterprise requirements exist in all companies and/or workplaces. 3 All performances in this unit standard must comply with the requirements of: Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, Fair Trading Act 1986, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Privacy Act 1993, Health Act 1956, and their subsequent amendments. Elements and performance criteria Element 1 Explain hair growth and hair types. Performance criteria 1.1 Explanation identifies the types of hair structure. Range 1.2 lanugo, vellus, terminal. An explanation identifies the hair growth cycle. Range anagen, catagen, telogen. Element 2 Perform a depilatory wax service. Range soft wax, hot wax. Performance criteria 2.1 Contraindications to depilatory wax treatment for a client are identified in terms of skin diseases and disorders. Range bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic, systemic, traumatic. 2.2 Equipment is selected, prepared, and arranged to accord maximum efficiency of service. 2.3 The waxing product is selected to meet client satisfaction, and is applied in accordance with sound product knowledge and manufacturers’ instructions. New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 508 version 4 Page 3 of 3 2.4 The depilatory wax service is performed to the satisfaction of the client and to a standard that ensures the optimum results. 2.5 Safety precautions are observed in terms of control of wax temperature to minimise the risk of skin damage, and in terms of equipment positioning to minimise risk to client. 2.6 The follow-up procedures are undertaken according to manufacturers’ requirements. Range record card, home-care advice, recommended product sales, referral and monitor of client, clean up. Please note Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP).
