NZQA registered unit standard 28853 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Assist with managing the environmental impacts of a primary industry production operation Level 4 Credits 15 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are working in a primary industry operation and recognises the skills and knowledge necessary to assist with the management of environmental impacts on water, soil, and air. Classification Agriculture > Agricultural Resource Maintenance Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Workplace procedures refer to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for reporting farming activities. 2 Management of environmental impacts must comply with legislation and bylaws, including the Resource Management Act 1991, and territorial and local authority bylaws. 3 The environmental impacts used as evidence for assessment against this unit standard must relate to the learner’s workplace. Learners whose primary workplace is a dairy farm must include evidence of the management of the environmental impacts of effluent. 4 Examples of appropriate actions to manage soil status may include – minimal tillage, crop rotation, grazing management strategies, vegetation management, erosion management, adjusting stock class or rates, erosion control, complying with industry recommendations for agri-chemical and fertiliser, complying with industry recommended effluent application procedures. 5 Examples of appropriate actions to manage water quality include – timing of fertiliser application, minimising run off or leaching, fencing and bridging waterways, riparian planting, complying with industry recommendations for agri-chemical and fertiliser, complying with industry recommended effluent application procedures. 6 Demonstration of understanding may be assessed in a number of ways, which could include the ability to complete practical tasks, if it is clear that the understanding is essential underpinning understanding to the task/s, and that the task/s could not be completed without the learner having that understanding. Evidence requirements 1.1 Demonstrates understanding of relevant legislative requirements. 1.2 Demonstrates understanding of nutrient cycles related to land, water or air quality. Range 1.3 must include nitrogen and one other nutrient. Demonstrates understanding of practices that minimise the effects of primary industry production systems on soil, water and air. Outcome 2 Assist with managing the environmental impacts of a primary industry production operation. Evidence requirements 2.1 Evaluates the soil health status of a specified soil type. 2.2 Minimises environmental impacts on soil. Range 2.3 at least 2 impacts. Minimises environmental impacts on water. Range 2.4 at least 2 impacts. Records and reports relevant environmental related data, according to workplace procedures.
