Explanatory notes

1 Maaga variations are acceptable in meeting the requirements of this unit standard.

Endorsement of village variations may be conducted by pulotu.

3 Definitions

Dyeing techniques refers to – batik, tie dye, soaking, beating, boiling, blowing, printing, painting;

Fakaholoaga refers to the process by which something is learnt or knowledge is transmitted;

Maaga is any one of the 14 villages that the learner identifies with through either matrilineal or patrilineal lines, or self-identifies through acceptable fakaholoaga;

Niue themed articles refer to use of symbols, patterns, and objects of Niue origin, such as – tika, katoua, uga, coconut;

Pulotu refers to Niue village or community recognised and/or appointed experts;

Traditional refers to a specific body of knowledge and practice held by pulotu, which is imparted to learners through community resources such as cultural leaders and advisors.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Apply traditional dyeing techniques to produce Niue themed articles.

Range evidence of three different Niue themed articles is required.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Article incorporates creativity in design.

Range creativity includes use of different materials combinations, patterns, colour combinations, and decorations; evidence of all is not required in each article but must be evidenced across the three articles.

1.2 Dye is applied using traditional Niue dyeing techniques to achieve intended dyeing outcomes.

1.3 Designs are consistent with a traditional Niue theme.
