Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people who are required to
assist with livestock husbandry tasks in a pastoral livestock
system.

Learners understanding of this topic may be applied to specific farming industry
contexts where relevant. Examples of contexts include beef, dairy, deer, goats or
sheep.

Performance of all aspects of this unit standard must comply with the Welfare Code
relevant to the type of livestock with which the candidate is involved, Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, sustainable practices, and on farm procedures.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Recognise health, ill health, and ill thrift in livestock.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Recognises appearance and behaviour of healthy livestock.
1.2
Recognises signs of ill health and ill thrift in livestock.
1.3
Carries out routine observation of livestock and reports health problems.
1.4
Assists with diagnosis of common livestock health problems.

Assists with treatment of key livestock problems.
2.2
Maintains personal hygiene when treating livestock.
2.3
Complies with label recommendations for dosage and withholding periods.
2.4
Records and reports key data including those required for National Animal
Identification and Tracing (NAIT).
