NZQA registered unit standard 28972 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Assist with livestock mating and mating management Level 3 Purpose Credits 10 This unit standard is intended for people who are working under limited supervision in a livestock farming workplace and relates to the knowledge and skills required to assist with livestock mating and mating management. Classification Agriculture > Livestock Husbandry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Assessment of this unit standard should be achieved in the context of a specific farming operation. Examples of contexts include beef, dairy, deer, goats or sheep 2 If the workplace uses artificial insemination, candidates must be able to identify and report dams which are in oestrus (on heat). Appropriate heat detection methods vary between livestock species. 3 Examples of management practices to stimulate oestrus dams may include flushing, use of teasers, synchronisation. 4 Performance of all aspects of this unit standard should comply with the Welfare Code relevant to the type of livestock with which the candidate is involved, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, sustainable practices, and on farm procedures. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Assist with preparing livestock for mating. Evidence requirements 1.1 Assists with managing livestock condition. 1.2 Assists with management practices to stimulate oestrus. Outcome 2 Assist with moving and handling livestock for mating. Outcome 3 Assist with mating related observations and records. Evidence requirements 3.1 Observes and reports on the mating status of breeding livestock. 3.2 Records livestock mating information in accordance with workplace procedures.
