NZQA registered unit standard 21176 version 3 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe the process of measuring zinc coating and measure thickness of hot dip galvanized zinc coatings Level 3 Credits 2 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to describe the process of measuring hot dip galvanized zinc coating and measure hot dip galvanized zinc coating thickness. Classification Industrial Coatings > Hot Dip Galvanizing Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 The current version of the following documents must be complied with: AS/NZS 4680:2006 Hot-dip galvanized (zinc) coatings on fabricated ferrous articles, available at http://www.standards.co.nz; After-Fabrication Hot Dip Galvanizing: A practical reference for designers, specifiers, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, and users, Galvanizing Association of New Zealand, website http://www.galvanizing.org.nz; ASTM E376-11 Standard Practice for Measuring Coating Thickness by MagneticField or Eddy-Current (Electromagnetic) Examination Methods, available at http://www.astm.org; manufacturer’s instructions. 2 Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used throughout operations in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. 3 Definition Company procedures refer to all documented policies and procedures of the candidate’s employer at the time of training including, but not limited to, those relating to health, safety, environment, quality, and operations. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe the process of measuring hot dip galvanized zinc coating. Evidence requirements 1.1 The reasons multiple readings are required, and methods of taking readings, are described in accordance with After-Fabrication Hot Dip Galvanizing, ASTM E376-06 and/or manufacturer’s instructions. NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (Incorporated) (MITO) SSB Code 101542 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 21176 version 3 Page 2 of 3 1.2 The effects of surface texture and profile are described in relation to coating thickness readings. 1.3 The accuracy and calibration requirements for non-destructive testing methods are described in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Outcome 2 Measure hot dip galvanized zinc coating thickness. Range plate, fabricated item, small component, hollow component, circular surface. Evidence requirements 2.1 Readings are taken in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. 2.2 Average of readings is calculated and recorded in accordance with AS/NZS 4680 or ASTM E376-11.
