This unit standard is designed for people entering the hot dip galvanizing industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to describe safety and emergency procedures, equipment, and known hazards in a hot dip galvanizing facility, and exhibit safe work practices at a hot dip galvanizing facility.

1 The current version of the following legislation must be complied with:

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE).

2 Definitions

Company procedures refer to all documented policies and procedures of the candidate’s employer at the time of training including, but not limited to, those relating to health, safety, environment, quality, and operations.

Personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE) includes – overalls, safety footwear, gloves, gauntlets, waterproof gear, eye protectors; and may include but is not limited to – head protectors, hearing protectors, breathing apparatus.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Describe safety and emergency procedures, equipment, and known hazards in a hot dip galvanizing facility.

Evidence requirements

1.1 PPE is described in terms of the function of each component.

1.2 The correct use and maintenance of PPE are described in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

1.3 Known site hazards are described in terms of their potential harm to self, others, and a hot dip galvanizing facility.

1.4 The procedures for accident and/or incident reporting are described in accordance with legislative requirements and company procedures.

1.5 Emergency procedures are described in accordance with legislative requirements and company procedures.

Range emergency situations include but are not limited to – spatter, spillage, explosion.

1.6 Good housekeeping practices for a hot dip galvanizing facility are described in accordance with company procedures.

Safety factors to be observed when working at a hot dip galvanizing facility are described in accordance with company procedures.

Range includes but are not limited to

– manual handling, processing baths, forklift, overhead crane.

Outcome 2

Exhibit safe work practices at a hot dip galvanizing facility.

Evidence requirements

2.1

PPE is used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and company procedures.

2.2 Safe work practices are exhibited in accordance with HSE Act and company procedures.

Range may include but is not limited to – hygiene, forklifts, manual handling, visitors to site, use of drugs and alcohol.

2.3 Known site hazards are identified and their effects minimised in accordance with company procedures.

Accident and/or incident reporting is carried out in accordance with legislative requirements and company procedures.
