People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for and wet salt hides; preserve green hides; demonstrate teamwork; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements. Classification Fellmongery and Leather Processing > Leather Processing Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 2 Definitions Organisational requirements – instructions to staff on policies and procedures which are documented in memo, electronic or manual format and are available in the workplace. Company specifications – product specifications set by the company relating to materials, processes and practices. Operator – the candidate being assessed against this unit standard. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare for and wet salt hides. Evidence requirements 1.1 Start-up, monitoring, loading, and shutdown of hide processing machinery meets organisational and manufacturer’s requirements. 1.2 Hides accepted for salting meet company specifications. 1.3 Chemical preservatives are calculated and mixed to company specified formulations for the type and weight of hides to be processed in accordance with organisational requirements. Primary Industry Training Organisation Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 8015 version 8 Page 2 of 4 1.4 Hides and chemicals are loaded into processing vessels in accordance with weight, quantity, and sequence requirements. 1.5 Wet salting process and time meet organisational requirements for the weight and type of hides being processed. 1.6 Tests are conducted and corrective actions taken for any non-compliance in accordance with organisational requirements. 1.7 Samples are taken for analysis in accordance with organisational requirements. 1.8 Hides are removed from processing vessels and drained of excess moisture in accordance with organisational requirements. 1.9 Hide processing records are maintained in accordance with organisational requirements. Range records include but are not limited to – dates, times, hide origins, hide types, hide condition, hide weights, chemicals used, test results. Outcome 2 Preserve green hides. Evidence requirements 2.1 Hide preservation methods meet organisational requirements for the required holding period. 2.2 Chemicals and formulations used to preserve hides meet company specifications for the types of hides and required period of protection. 2.3 Preservation chemicals are handled and mixed in accordance with organisational and manufacturer’s requirements. 2.4 Green hides are treated, handled, and stored in accordance with organisational requirements for the preservation formulation used. 2.5 Hide identification and treatment records are maintained to organisational requirements. Outcome 3 Demonstrate team-work. Evidence requirements 3.1 Tasks are completed within the time and space allocation determined by product flow and organisational requirements. Primary Industry Training Organisation Code 101558 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 8015 version 8 Page 3 of 4 3.2 The quality and completeness of tasks meet the operational requirements of downstream co-workers. 3.3 Communication and feedback are provided to and requested from co-workers to maintain and improve task and product quality. 3.4 Co-workers are not endangered through the operator's methods and equipment. 3.5 Co-worker assistance is provided within the confines of product flow and operator availability. 3.6 Any machinery, equipment, and facility malfunctions are identified and reported in accordance with organisational requirements. 3.7 Conflict resolution techniques are applied to minimise interpersonal differences with co-workers that may adversely affect team performance in accordance with organisational requirements. Outcome 4 Comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements. Evidence requirements 4.1 Company supplied clothing, and hygiene and safety equipment are worn and used in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements. 4.2 Work methods comply with specified organisational and statutory requirements to minimise the risk of product contamination and injuries to the operator and others. 4.3 Any unsafe and unhygienic conditions are identified and corrective actions taken in accordance with organisational requirements. 4.4 Equipment, operator and work area cleanliness complies with organisational and statutory requirements.
