NZQA registered unit standard 28939 version 1 Page 1 of 3 Title Understand the risks to on-farm milk quality and assist with implementing solutions to milk quality problems Level 3 Credits 10 Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are working on a dairy farm, and recognises the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate understanding of the risks to on-farm milk quality and be able to assist with the implementing solutions to milk quality problems in their role as a milk harvester. A learner with a good understanding of a topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learners’ understanding is embedded in their practices and behaviour. Range must include - bacterial contamination, inhibitory substances, somatic cell count, chemical residues, supplementary feed, water/freezing point and sensory, poor water quality, and milking plant related factors. Evidence requirements 1.1 Identifies the risks to on-farm milk quality. 1.2 Identifies probable causes of the problems that affect milk quality. 1.3 Identifies possible solutions to correct on-farm milk quality problems. Outcome 2 Assist with implementing solutions to on-farm milk quality problems. Range at least four. Evidence requirements 2.1 Suggests a solution for each milk quality problem. 2.2 Implements each solution according to workplace procedure. 2.3 Reviews effectiveness of the solution after an agreed period. Outcome 3 Demonstrate understanding of the consequences of on-farm milk quality problems. Evidence requirements 3.1 Identifies the possible financial implications for a farmer. 3.2 Identifies the potential consequences to the dairy industry.
