All work practices must comply with regulations and codes of practice pertaining to
the gas industry. A full list of current regulations and applicable codes is available
from the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (Incorporated) (MITO).

Definitions
Company procedures means the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, environmental, and quality management requirements.
They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy statements.
Domestic meters in this unit standard means meters up to and including 25 cubic
metres per hour.
GMS means gas measurement system.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Locate and identify procedures, documentation, and equipment for changing and installing
domestic gas meters and regulators.
Performance criteria
1.1
Company procedures for changing and installing domestic meters and
regulators are located and interpreted in relation to specified job requirements.
1.2
Job instructions are confirmed in accordance with company procedures.
Range
instructions include – site location, utility plans and/or mark-outs,
consents, easements, meter install-change docket, customer
liaison.
1.3
Potential environmental and safety hazards are identified in accordance with
company procedures.
1.4
Domestic meter and regulator equipment, components, and materials are
identified and described in terms of type and function.
Range
equipment – hand tools, GMS kit, fittings;
function – passing unaccounted for gas (also known as pug),
working pressure test, flow, lockup.
1.5
Equipment is described in terms of potential hazards of incorrect application
and operation and the steps to avoid them are described in accordance with
company procedures.
1.6
Resource requirements are identified and sourced in accordance with company
procedures.

Change and install domestic gas meters and regulators.
Performance criteria
2.1
Safety hazards are identified, and isolated, removed, or minimised in
accordance with company procedures.
Range
may include – personal protective equipment, safe access and
egress, gas escape, fire, explosion, asphyxiation, environmental
protection, continuity bonds.
2.2
Equipment and materials for changing domestic gas meters and regulators are
prepared, handled and positioned in accordance with company procedures and
manufacturer’s instructions.
2.3
Meter, regulator, and appliances are isolated and shutdown in accordance with
manufacturer's and company procedures.
2.4
System specifications are applied to the equipment being installed in
accordance with company procedures.

Meter install-change dockets are completed and processed in accordance with
company procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
