Explanatory notes
1
Definitions
Deep drilling refers to the drilling of holes of more than 500mm in depth in concrete.
Large core drilling refers to the drilling of holes of more than 400mm in diameter.
Specifications refer to documented instructions (oral, written, graphic) and may
include any of the following: manufacturer’s specifications, recommendations or
technical data sheets; material specifications; specifications from a specialist source
such as an architect, designer, engineer or a supervisor; site or work specific
requirements.
Workplace practice refers to the documented procedures specific to a workplace
which set out the standard and required practices of that workplace.

Assessment against this unit standard must be undertaken on site. On site refers to
a wide range of building and construction environments within which trade skills are
required, and includes concrete production and concrete construction sites.

Evidence must be shown for the drilling of three holes of differing depth and
diameter, greater than 500mm in depth and/or greater than 400mm in diameter.

Credit for this unit standard indicates compliance with industry practice. Industry
practice, for the purpose of this unit standard, refers to the ability to work
unsupervised, demonstrating knowledge and skills that reflect the productivity,
uniformity, finish quality and material economies currently accepted within industry.

Outcome 1
Prepare to perform large core and deep drilling of concrete on site.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Job requirements are identified and confirmed in accordance with specifications
and workplace practice.
1.2
Drilling equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment are selected in
accordance with job requirements and workplace practice.
1.3
Drilling equipment is set up in accordance with job requirements and workplace
practice.
Range
inspection of bit to ensure fitness for purpose, setting angles
(parameters), slurry control, mounting to anchor, aligning to hole
centre.
Outcome 2
Perform large core and deep drilling of concrete on site.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Drilling equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions,
job requirements, and workplace practice.
Range
water volume, motor speed, slurry control, feed pressure, ensuring
security and safety of core during and after operation.
2.2
Drilling job is completed in accordance with job requirements and workplace
practice.
2.3
Drilling equipment is shut down, core is removed and equipment is dismantled
without damage to the surrounding environment, and in accordance with
workplace practice.

Outcome 3
Complete work operations.
Evidence requirements
3.1
All operations are safely completed; workplace and equipment are cleaned in
accordance with workplace practice and environmental safety requirements,
and routine maintenance is carried out in accordance with workplace practice.
