Purpose
This unit standard is for people working, or intending to work, in the gas
transmission industry.
People credited with this unit standard are, on a gas transmission pipeline
system, able to: locate, identify, and interpret procedures for operating and
maintaining gas filtration equipment, and explain associated hazards;
operate and maintain gas filtration equipment; respond to deviations from
normal conditions; and recommission gas filtration equipment.

Company procedures refer to the documented methods for performing work activities
and include health and safety, environmental, site requirements, and quality
management requirements. They may refer to manuals, codes of practice, or policy
statements.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Locate, identify, and interpret procedures for operating and maintaining gas filtration
equipment, and explain associated hazards on a gas transmission pipeline system.
Performance criteria
1.1
Company procedures for operating and maintaining gas filtration equipment are
located, and are interpreted in relation to specified job requirements.
1.2
Job instructions and system specifications are confirmed in accordance with
company procedures.
Range:
1.3

Potential hazards associated with the operation and maintenance of gas
filtration equipment are explained in accordance with company procedures.

may include but are not limited to – flammable product, high
pressure, loss of gas supply to customer, hazardous area
consideration, contamination, damage to downstream equipment.
Element 2
Operate and maintain gas filtration equipment on a gas transmission pipeline system.
Performance criteria
2.1
Communication of the intended work activities is carried out with appropriate
personnel prior to commencing work in accordance with company procedures.

Methods of isolating the filtration system from service without disrupting the gas
supply are carried out in accordance with company procedures.

Respond to deviations from normal conditions of gas filtration equipment on a gas

corrosion damage.
Performance criteria
3.1
Deviations from normal operating conditions are identified, and the steps to
avoid and recover from them are described in accordance with company
procedures.
3.2
System specifications are identified and applied to the equipment being
repaired, in accordance with system requirements.

3.3
Components and component parts are sourced, fitted, and adjusted in
accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
3.4
Consequences of incorrect part selection and repair of equipment, and the
steps to avoid them, are described in accordance with company procedures.

Element 4
Recommission gas filtration equipment on a gas transmission pipeline system.
Performance criteria
4.1
Communication of the intention to place the gas filtration system back into
service is carried out with appropriate personnel in accordance with company
procedures.
4.2
Gas filtration and ancillary equipment is purged and recommissioned in
accordance with company procedures.
4.3
Gas filtration and ancillary equipment is tested for integrity in accordance with
company procedures.
4.4
Disposal of used materials is carried out in accordance with company
procedures to ensure there is no fire or environmental risk.

4.5

Documentation related to monitoring and maintaining the gas filtration
equipment is completed and communication to all appropriate personnel is
carried out in accordance with company procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
