Each strand represents a process undertaken in solid wood manufacturing. Graduates will be capable of working safely in entry-level operational roles in one of these processes under general supervision. Graduate profile Graduates of this qualification will be able to: - Understand employee responsibilities, training needs, workplace risks, and work safely and collaboratively in a team within a solid wood manufacturing environment. - Understand the physical characteristics of wood in relation to timber product quality. Graduates of the Finger Jointing Strand will also be able to: - Understand finger jointing processes, glue use, key performance indicators, and market and quality requirements. - Measure moisture content of wood products and clean engineered wood product equipment. Outcome Statement Graduates of the Laminating Strand will also be able to: - Understand key performance indicators, and solid wood product markets and quality requirements. - Operate and monitor the performance of a laminator and cross cut saw centre in a solid wood manufacturing environment. Graduates of the Sawmilling Strand will also be able to: - Understand sawmilling products and processes, and apply basic measurement and calculations used in solid wood manufacturing. - Process, handle and sort timber products in a sawmilling operation. Graduates of the Timber Drying and Treatment Strand will also be able to: - Measure moisture content to determine further processing requirements. - Understand sawmilling products and processes in relation to timber treatment. Graduates of the Timber Grading Strand will also be able to: - Understand solid wood products and timber grading processes. - Take and record measurements used in solid wood manufacturing, and measure moisture content in wood. - Carry out practical tasks required of entry level timber graders. Graduates of the Timber Machining Strand will also be able to: - Understand sawmilling products and processes, timber machining principles, and quality requirements in solid wood product manufacturing. - Feed in and tail out a planer, and monitor planer performance within a solid wood manufacturing operation. Graduates of the Wood Pallet Manufacturing Strand will also be able to - Understand job specifications, quality requirements and environmental issues in wood pallet manufacturing. - Carry out practical tasks related to manufacturing wood pallets. Education pathway This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing (Level 3) with strands in Finger Jointing; Pole, Post and Pile; Saw Doctoring; Sawmilling; Timber Drying; Timber Grading and Optimising; Timber Machining; and Timber Treatment [Ref: 1969]. Employment pathway Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge within a solid wood manufacturing environment to work in entry-level positions in finger jointing; laminating; pole, post and pile; sawmilling; timber drying and treatment; timber grading; timber machining and wood pallet manufacturing. Qualification Specification Qualification award This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has an approved programme of study, or industry training programme, leading to the qualification. The certificate will display the logos of the NZQF and Competenz, and may display the name and/or logo of the awarding body. Evidence requirements for managing consistency All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process scheduled by NZQA. This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate’s achievement of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds for qualification outcome Qualification Reference 1967 © New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2014 Page 2 of 6 achievement and areas for improvement. To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification graduate profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their own evidence in a high level report. Evidence will include the following: Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the qualification meet the graduate profile outcomes. Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes continue to meet current industry needs. A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet the graduate profile outcomes. Credit transfer and recognition of prior learning arrangements Organisations seeking approval to award the qualification are expected to have Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment processes in place. Credit transfer will be automatic where assessment standards are used for assessment within programmes of study or training leading to this qualification. Credit 13 Qualification Reference 1967 © New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2014 Page 5 of 6 Transition information Replacement information This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Solid Wood Manufacturing (Level 2) with strands in Defecting; Finger Jointing and Laminating; Pole, Post and Pile; Saw Doctoring Principles; Sawmilling; Timber Drying and Treatment; and Timber Machining [Ref: 1690]. People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for that qualification by 31 December 2018 or transfer their results to this replacement New Zealand qualification. New enrolments into programmes leading to the expiring qualifications will not be accepted after 31 December 2015. It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
