Strategic purpose
statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing
industry with people who have introductory skills and knowledge relevant to
entry-level roles within this industry.
Each strand represents a process undertaken in solid wood manufacturing.
Graduates will be capable of working safely in entry-level operational roles
in one of these processes under general supervision.

profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

Understand employee responsibilities, training needs, workplace risks,
and work safely and collaboratively in a team within a solid wood
manufacturing environment.

Understand the physical characteristics of wood in relation to timber
product quality.
Graduates of the Finger Jointing Strand will also be able to:

Understand finger jointing processes, glue use, key performance
indicators, and market and quality requirements.

Measure moisture content of wood products and clean engineered
wood product equipment.
Outcome Statement
Graduates of the Laminating Strand will also be able to:

Understand key performance indicators, and solid wood product
markets and quality requirements.

Operate and monitor the performance of a laminator and cross cut saw
centre in a solid wood manufacturing environment.
Graduates of the Pole, Post and Pile Strand will also be able to:

Understand log yard and log making operations, compliance relevant to
chainsaw use, and phytosanitary requirements in solid wood
manufacturing.

Graduates of the Sawmilling Strand will also be able to:

measurement and calculations used in solid wood manufacturing.

Process, handle and sort timber products in a sawmilling operation.
Graduates of the Timber Drying and Treatment Strand will also be able
to:

Measure moisture content to determine further processing
requirements.

treatment.

This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Solid Wood
Manufacturing (Level 3) with strands in Finger Jointing; Pole, Post and Pile;
Saw Doctoring; Sawmilling; Timber Drying; Timber Grading and Optimising;
Timber Machining; and Timber Treatment [Ref: 1969].
Employment
pathway
Holders of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge within a solid
wood manufacturing environment to work in entry-level positions in finger
jointing; laminating; pole, post and pile; sawmilling; timber drying and
treatment; timber grading; timber machining and wood pallet manufacturing.

Qualification award
This qualification can be awarded by an organisation which has an approved
programme of study, or industry training programme, leading to the
qualification.
The certificate will display the logos of the NZQF and Competenz, and may
display the name and/or logo of the awarding body.
Evidence
requirements for
managing
consistency
All TEOs either arranging training or delivering programmes that lead to the
award of the qualification are required to participate in a consistency process
scheduled by NZQA.
This will involve reviewing evidence associated with graduate’s achievement
of outcomes, and agreeing acceptable thresholds for qualification outcome

achievement and areas for improvement.
To demonstrate how graduates are achieving the qualification graduate
profile outcomes, TEOs are required to produce their own evidence in a high
level report.
Evidence will include the following:

Employer surveys to determine if graduates of the qualification meet
the graduate profile outcomes.

Evidence of effective processes to ensure programmes continue to
meet current industry needs.

A range of workplace evidence demonstrating that graduates meet
the graduate profile outcomes.

Any other relevant evidence as appropriate.

Credit transfer and
recognition of prior
learning
arrangements
Organisations seeking approval to award the qualification are expected to
have Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) or Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) assessment processes in place. Credit transfer will be
automatic where assessment standards are used for assessment within
programmes of study or training leading to this qualification.

Transition information
Replacement
information
This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Solid Wood
Manufacturing (Level 2) with strands in Defecting; Finger Jointing and
Laminating; Pole, Post and Pile; Saw Doctoring Principles; Sawmilling;
Timber Drying and Treatment; and Timber Machining [Ref: 1690].
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for
that qualification by 31 December 2018 or transfer their results to this replacement New Zealand
qualification.
New enrolments into programmes leading to the expiring qualifications will not be accepted after
31 December 2015.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements.
However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the
address below. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
