Purpose
The National Certificate in Tamariki Ora – Well Child Services (Level 4) [Ref: 1089] is
designed for people who are providing well child care services for children under 5 years
of age within the context of whānau or family, under the Well Child Framework, and within
the requirements of the Well Child – Tamariki Ora national schedule. People who provide
these services are called Well Child workers. Other terms that may be used in Tamariki
Ora – Well Child services include Community Health Worker; Community Well Child
Health Worker; Kaiāwhina; Kaitiaki; Plunket Community Karitane; and Plunket Kaiāwhina.
People awarded this qualification are able to demonstrate skills for working with families or
whānau; describe human development and manage health conditions; provide
interventions to achieve whānau or family health goals; implement a health promotion
strategy; support a whānau or family to access local community services; and act as an
advocate for people; within a Tamariki Ora – Well Child service provider setting. People
awarded this qualification are able to integrate knowledge, skills, and values learning in
Tamariki Ora – Well Child service work.
This qualification also recognises an understanding of the meaning and relevance of Te
Tiriti o Waitangi in social service work because Well Child workers' practice is informed by
Te Tiriti as well as boundaries set by national specifications for the Well Child Framework,
ethical practice, and legislation.
This qualification has strands that prepare people for working within Mainstream, Māori,
and Pacific Tamariki Ora – Well Child services contexts.
At this stage there is no higher level qualification on the National Qualifications Framework
for Well Child workers. People who have completed this qualification could progress to
one of the national diplomas in the social services, such as the National Diploma in
Counselling (Level 6) [Ref: 0988]; the National Diploma in Iwi/Māori Social Services
(Level 6) [Ref: 0667]; the National Diploma in Social Work (Level 6) [Ref: 0989]; or the
National Diploma in Youth Work (Level 6) [Ref: 0670]; or gain entry into nursing or health
science qualifications.
