Purpose
This unit standard is intended for people who are members of the New
Zealand Cadet Forces. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
demonstrate basic knowledge of a radio telephone net; demonstrate
knowledge of NZCF call logging procedures; and establish a radio telephone
net for a specified NZCF activity.

This unit standard applies to Single Side Band (SSB), Very High Frequency (VHF), or
Ultra High Frequency (UHF), being operating either from base or using hand held
equipment.

the Radiocommunications Act 1989 and Radiocommunications Regulations 2001.

If radios are hired from a radio licensee (for example New Zealand Mountain Safety
Council), then the licensee’s protocols will apply.

All knowledge and practice requirements must comply with the policy and training
manuals for NZCF, RNZN, NZA and/or RNZAF.

Training manuals relevant to this unit standard include NZCF manuals 155 (SCC),
156 (NZCC), 157 (ATC), and 159 (Radio Telephone). Training manuals are available
from the NZCF, New Zealand Defence Force Headquarters, Private Bag, Wellington.

Definitions
ATC is the Air Training Corps of NZCF;
NZA is the New Zealand Army;
NZCC is the New Zealand Cadet Corps of NZCF;
NZCF is the New Zealand Cadet Forces;
RNZN is the Royal New Zealand Navy;
RNZAF is the Royal New Zealand Air Force;
SCC is the Sea Cadet Corps of NZCF.

Element 1
Demonstrate basic knowledge of a radio telephone net.
Performance criteria
1.1
Elements of a radio telephone net are described in accordance with NZCF
training manuals.
1.2
A radio telephone net plan is described in accordance with NZCF training
manuals.
Range
diagram, frequency, call signs, code words, timing, security
measures.
Element 2
Demonstrate knowledge of NZCF call logging procedures.
Performance criteria
2.1
Call logging protocols are described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.
Range
entries, corrections, operator identification, opening/closing a
circuit.

2.2
Data information recorded in a radio log is described in accordance with NZCF
training manuals.
Range
2.3

Element 3
Establish a radio telephone net for a specified NZCF activity.
Range
Net Controlling Station (NCS) and three sub-stations;
minimum of three transmissions and three receptions.
Performance criteria
3.1
A radio telephone net is established in accordance with NZCF training manuals.
3.2
Radio telephone net usage is demonstrated by sending and receiving
messages.
3.3
Calls are logged in accordance with relevant protocols and procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
