This unit standard is intended for crew members working in a
felling operation. It covers the role and responsibilities of the
tree observer. It is important that anyone working in a felling
operation understands the role of the tree observer. The tree
observer takes direction from the tree faller.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
knowledge of the role of the observer in a tree felling operation,
and demonstrate knowledge of communication between the
observer and tree feller.

Definition
Worksite policy and procedures includes instructions to staff on policy and
procedures (including the application of legislation to work site situations) which are
formally or informally documented. Examples are standard operating procedures,
codes of practice, specifications and worksite signage.

The rules regarding the requirement to have an observer in a tree felling
operation are described in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice.
1.3
The selection of an observer is described in accordance with the Approved
Code of Practice, the Best Practice Guide, and worksite policy and procedures.
1.4
The position which the observer is required to take up is described in
accordance with the Best Practice Guide and worksite policy and procedures.
1.5
The responsibilities of the observer before, during and after tree felling are
described.
