NZQA registered unit standard 15615 version 2 Page 1 of 3 Title Tap molten iron and molten slag Level 3 Credits Purpose 15 This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector. People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare for tapping, and tap slag and iron. Classification Steel Manufacturing > Steel Product Handling Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Definition Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process. 2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991. 3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare for tapping. Evidence requirements 1.1 Taphole and launders are prepared in accordance with company documentation to enable tapping schedule to be achieved. Range 1.2 preparation includes but is not limited to – deskull, sand up, preheat. Equipment is checked to reduce the possibility of equipment malfunction during tapping in accordance with company documentation. Range Competenz SSB Code 101571 equipment includes but is not limited to – rock drill, lance holder, gas torch, mud gun. Range Outcome 2 Tap slag and iron. Evidence requirements 2.1 Iron and slag are tapped in accordance with company documentation. tapped includes but is not limited to – opening, maintaining and closing taphole; bowl/ladle levels, fume extraction, at specified times. Range 2.2 Tapped iron meets company requirements for slag content. 2.3 Temperature tests meet company documentation requirements for timing and method. 2.4 Slag and iron samples sent to the laboratory meet technical process specifications.
