Purpose

This unit standard is applicable to a range of manufacturing
processes such as organic coating, metallic coating and roll
forming.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare
uncoiling equipment and steel coils; load steel coils to uncoiling
equipment; prepare steel coils for further processing; and
monitor steel coil condition and take remedial action.

Definitions
Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s
manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.
Further processing includes but is not limited to – welding, stitching or roll forming.

Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.

This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.

Outcome 1
Prepare uncoiling equipment and steel coils.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Uncoiling equipment is set up to centre coils relative to production process in
accordance with company documentation.
1.2
Input coils are checked against production schedule to ensure manufacture of
in-specification product.

Communications regarding defects facilitate the production schedule being
achieved and are in accordance with company documentation.

Load steel coils to uncoiling equipment.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Coil orientation and location are in accordance with company documentation.
2.2
Coils remain undamaged during loading operations in accordance with
company documentation.
2.3
The loaded coil's position and tension enable the manufacture of inspecification product.
2.4
The loading equipment is returned to standby position in accordance with
company documentation.
Outcome 3
Prepare steel coils for further processing.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Defective and damaged material is removed in accordance with company
documentation.
3.2
Positioning of coil noses and tails relative to each other enable the next
production process to be carried out in accordance with company
documentation.

3.3
positioning includes but is not limited to – ends positioned for
joining, stitching, or direct processing.
Coil positioning equipment is set up for next use in accordance with company
documentation.

initiation of continuous process.

Evidence requirements
4.1
Visual monitoring of coil for defective and damaged material is carried out in
accordance with company documentation.
monitoring includes but is not limited to – material marked or
removed.

4.2
Communication to the next production process of the incidence of any defective
and damaged material enables process adjustments to be made in order to
manufacture in-specification product.
4.3
Sourcing and preparation of replacement feed coils due to any defective and
damaged stock ensures the production schedule is achieved.
