Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in a packhouse. People credited with
this unit standard are able to maintain an inventory of packhouse supplies
and order packaging materials; and design and implement a system to
ensure sufficient packaging is assembled and packed to meet workplace
packing plans.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Maintain an inventory of packhouse supplies and order packaging materials.
Performance criteria
1.1
The number of units available for packing produce is determined in accordance
with workplace procedures from a stocktake of all materials on hand.
1.2
Quantities required of each packaging component are estimated in accordance
with crop estimates and packing plans.
1.3
Packaging materials are sourced on most favourable terms in accordance with
workplace procedures from comparisons of prices and delivery schedules.
1.4
Orders are placed, and records kept for inwards goods in accordance with
workplace procedures.
1.5
Orders are checked to verify delivery and quality of packaging material in
accordance with workplace procedures.
1.6
Packaging materials are stored in accordance with workplace procedures so
that components are accessible as they are required.
Element 2
Design and implement a system to ensure sufficient packaging is assembled and packed
to meet workplace packing plans.
Performance criteria
2.1
System identifies staff numbers required to meet workplace packing plans.
2.2
Staff are trained to assemble packaging in accordance with workplace
procedures.
Range
packaging may include but is not limited to – packaging inserts,
configuration, palletising, shrink wrap, polyliners, promotional
material, documentation, labelling.

2.3
System ensures that packaging configuration meets workplace procedures and
standards.
Range
may include but is not limited to – internal audit, quality control
checks, outward goods inspection.
2.4
Volume of assembled packaging is monitored so that adequate stocks are
available for packers to pack product.
2.5
Containers are labelled and identified in accordance with workplace procedures
and grade standards.
2.6
Documentation is completed in accordance with workplace procedures and
grade standards.
2.7
Quality is checked at each step and corrective action taken, where required, in
accordance with workplace procedures.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority, or an inter-institutional body
with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from
assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by the Qualifications Authority before
they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
