This unit standard is intended primarily for use in the training of personnel in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning

(HVAC) and covers pre-commissioning and maintenance of

HVAC systems.

People credited with this unit standard, under supervision are able to: pre-commission water based and non-water based

HVAC systems; and demonstrate HVAC maintenance procedures.

1 Reference

Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

2 The skills of this unit standard are expected to be demonstrated under supervision by the candidate’s supervisor.

3 Definitions

Chilled water systems include plain water, brine, and glycol systems.

Company practice refers to operational procedures put in place by the candidate’s employer. These include site safety procedures, equipment operating procedures, job procedures, quality assurance, and procedures for the purchase, handling, and disposal of equipment and components.

Hot water heating systems include low, medium, and high temperature systems.

Industrial liquids may include acids, alkalis, detergents, printing inks, and food products.

Industry practice refers to safe and sound practices generally accepted by competent trade persons within the HVAC industry.

Potable hot and cold water systems include commercial, industrial, and institutional systems larger than domestic systems.

Pre-commissioning includes those checks and procedures required to ensure proper equipment functionality and integration of components.

Specifications include technical standards, documented operating and maintenance procedures or instructions for the system, installation drawings, manufacturers’ data, installation instructions, installation programme schedules, material schedules, and site instructions.

4 Range a All evidence must comply with the relevant provisions of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. b Evidence may be gathered by the candidate over several work sites and may need to be spread between several time periods. There typically will be jobs where part of the job is completed in conjunction with other HVAC personnel.

The evidence relates to the candidates own specific work, not work jointly performed with other team members, except where the other team member is checking or assessing the candidate.

5 This unit standard is one of three designed to cover pre-commissioning and commissioning of HVAC systems, the others being Unit 26339, Pre-commission heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems and Unit 26330, Commission heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.

Pre-commission water based HVAC systems under supervision.

Range evidence of pre-commissioning of a hot water heating system, a chilled water system, a potable hot and cold water system, a condenser water system is required.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Pre-commissioning procedures are planned with reference to specifications and confirmed with supervisor.

Installation of system is checked for compliance with specifications.

Services supplies are checked in accordance with specifications.

Range electrical, water, gas.

Internal cleanliness of plant meets requirements in specifications.

Cleanliness of strainers is verified in accordance with specifications.

Correct rotation of motors is verified in accordance with specifications.

Visual checks confirm that circuit protective devices match motor name plate details.

Any non-completions of system are notified in accordance with industry practice.

1.10 Completion of system in accordance with specifications is organised and followed up in accordance with industry practice.

1.11 The system is verified as being ready to run for commissioning in accordance with specifications and supervisor’s instructions.

1.12 Pre-commissioning report is completed and actioned in accordance with supervisor’s instructions and industry practice.

Range evidence of pre-commissioning of a ventilation and air conditioning system, a steam and condensate system, a gas system, an industrial liquids system, a fume cupboard is required.

2.2 Installation of system is checked for compliance with specifications.

2.3 Services supplies are checked in accordance with specifications.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate HVAC maintenance procedures under supervision.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Maintenance procedures are planned with reference to specifications and confirmed with supervisor.

3.2 Maintenance of an HVAC system is conducted.

Range testing of controls; air filter cleaning procedure; strainer cleaning procedure; cooling tower testing, dosing, six monthly procedures; inspection and testing of fire dampers and duct heaters; inspection and maintenance of burners; maintenance of steam systems.

3.3 Maintenance documentation is completed to reflect actions taken in accordance with company practice.
