NZQA Expiring unit standard 1590 version 7 Page 1 of 3 Title Prepare and serve hot drinks to patients and/or residents as part of cleaning duties in health care facilities Level 2 Purpose Credits 2 This unit standard is for people entering the cleaning industry who may be required to prepare and serve hot drinks as part of their cleaning duties in hospitals and rest home facilities. People credited with this standard are able to: prepare hot drinks; serve hot drinks to patients and/or residents in health sector facilities; and complete job-related tasks. Classification Cleaning and Caretaking > Health Sector Cleaning Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of: Employment Relations Act 2000; Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992; Food Hygiene Regulations 1974; Food (Safety) Regulations 2002; Health and Disability Commissioner (Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights) Regulations, Health and Disability Commission, 1996. 2 Definition Health care facilities can include aged residential care facilities, dental surgeries, doctors’ surgeries, specialist clinics, general and specialist hospitals. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare hot drinks. Evidence requirements 1.1 Personal hygiene requirements are followed as required by facility and Food Hygiene Regulations 1974. 1.2 Trolley is set up with clean drinking utensils, supplies and consumables required for service. Outcome 2 Serve hot drinks to patients and/or residents in health care facilities. Evidence requirements 2.1 Instructions regarding fluid intake for individual patients and/or residents are noted. 2.2 Drinks are prepared to patient's and/or resident's requirements. 2.3 Instructions given by nursing staff or caregivers for serving drinks to individual patients and/or residents are followed. Range type of drinking utensil, quantity of drink. 2.4 Drinking utensil is placed in position according to patient's and/or resident's requirements. 2.5 Procedures for serving refreshments take account of patient's and/or resident's welfare and cultural values. Outcome 3 Complete job-related tasks. Evidence requirements 3.1 All drinking utensils are removed with minimum disturbance to patients and/or residents. 3.2 All drinking utensils and used items are stacked and transported to designated area without mishap and with minimum disturbance to patients and/or residents. 3.3 All drinking utensils and other equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with facility policy and Food Hygiene Regulations 1974. This unit standard is expiring. Assessment against the standard must take place by the last date for assessment set out below.
