This pre-entry unit standard is for people in a learning environment who are learning basic glass skills.

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the history of the glass industry.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the history of the glass industry.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The history of glass making is described in terms of the first materials and methods of manufacture used.

Range one example of each method is required from Middle-Eastern history and European history.

1.2 The process of glass making is identified and described in terms of its development period and the common uses for a range of glass types.

Range glass types include – blown glass, glass made by the cylinder method, crown glass, cast glass, plate glass, sheet glass, float glass.

1.3 The history of the glass industry in New Zealand is described in terms of the key factors in its development.

Range key factors include – initial sources and uses of glass, establishment of glazing as an industry, establishment of glass product manufacturing.

Social and economic factors that have influenced the development of the glass industry in New Zealand are identified and described in terms of urban development, building design, health and safety issues, material costs, and lifestyle changes.
