This unit standard covers the skills required to select and mix stains following a preset formula. Explanatory notes 1 This unit standard must be assessed against on-job. 2 Range Competence may be demonstrated using one of – water-based, solvent-based, oil-based stains. 3 This unit standard does not cover knowledge and skills required to colour match and formulate stains. These are covered in Unit 3157, Colour match and formulate stain for furniture surfaces. 4 The following legislation applies to this unit standard: Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. 5 Personal protective equipment, appropriate to job requirements, is to be selected and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and manufacturer’s instructions. 6 Definitions Manufacturer’s instructions are instructions provided by manufacturers of substances, equipment, and machinery used in furniture making. Examples are labels on substance containers, product data sheets, and operator’s manuals. Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These may include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare to select and mix stain for application to furniture surfaces. Evidence requirements 1.1 Tools and equipment for a job are identified and selected in accordance with the job specifications. Range stain formula, type of material to be stained. 1.2 Stain (or, if required, stains and reducer) is selected in accordance with job specifications. 1.3 An area is selected for preparing stain in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range clean, clear of dust, ventilated. Outcome 2 Select and prepare stain for application to furniture surfaces. Evidence requirements 2.1 Stain is shaken and stirred in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. 2.2 Stain or stains and reducer are measured and mixed to achieve the colour in accordance with the stain formula. 2.3 Stain is applied to sample board, left to dry, and then sealed in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. 2.4 Colour is checked for accuracy in accordance with worksite policies and procedures. Range 2.5 one of – matches formula board, approved by management. Spillages are dealt with in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and worksite policies and procedures.
