Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of primers and adhesives used for floor and wall
tiling, select primers and adhesives, mix primers and adhesives
on site, apply primers and adhesives to tile substrate on site,
and complete work operations.

Definitions
Specifications refers to documented instructions (oral, written, graphic) and may
include any of the following: manufacturer’s specifications, recommendations or
technical data sheets; material specifications; specifications from a specialist source
such as an architect, designer, engineer or a supervisor; site or work specific
requirements.
Working drawings refers to the set of drawings associated with a construction project,
and can include plans, elevations, sections, details or any other drawings that give
information about the project.
Work site practice refers to the documented procedures specific to a work site which
set out the standard and required practices of that work site.

For all on-site unit standards the practical assessment evidence must be provided in
the context of commercial business construction operations, in the workplace, under
normal workplace conditions.

practice refers to the ability to work unsupervised, demonstrating knowledge and
skills that reflect the productivity, uniformity, finish quality and material economies
currently accepted within industry.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of primers and adhesives used for floor and wall tiling.
Range
cement-based (one-pot, two-pot, three-pot), acrylic based (one-pot, two-pot).
Evidence requirements
1.1
Primers and adhesives used for floor and wall tiling are identified by types and
their uses.
1.2
Procedures for mixing tile primers and adhesives are explained in accordance
with manufacturer’s specifications.
1.3
Procedures for applying tile primers and adhesives are explained in accordance
with the manufacturer’s specifications and work site practice.
Outcome 2
Select primers and adhesives.
Range
primers and adhesives include – cement-based, acrylic-based, one-pot
adhesive, two-pot adhesive, three-pot adhesive;
evidence of two types of primers and two types of adhesives is required.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Type of substrate is identified from working drawings and site inspection.
2.2
Primers and adhesives are selected in accordance with job specifications and
tile type.

Mix primers and adhesives on site.

applies to those standards.
