People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate
knowledge of floor and wall tiling surface preparation, prepare
surfaces for tiling on site, and complete work operations.

1
Definitions
Specifications refers to documented instructions (oral, written, graphic) and may
include any of the following: manufacturer’s specifications, recommendations or
technical data sheets; material specifications; specifications from a specialist source
such as an architect, designer, engineer or a supervisor; site or work specific
requirements.
Work site practice refers to the documented procedures specific to a work site which
set out the standard and required practices of that work site.

For all on-site unit standards the practical assessment evidence must be provided in
the context of commercial business construction operations, in the workplace, under
normal workplace conditions.

Assessment against this unit standard requires evidence for at least one existing and
one new surface.

Credit for this unit standard indicates compliance with industry practice. Industry
practice refers to the ability to work unsupervised, demonstrating knowledge and
skills that reflect the productivity, uniformity, finish quality and material economies
currently accepted within industry.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of floor and wall tiling surface preparation.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Procedures for surface preparation for tiling are explained in terms of industry
practice.
Range
1.2

Procedures for the disposal of waste materials from tiling surface preparation
are explained in terms of industry practice.
Outcome 2
Prepare surfaces for tiling on site.
Range
concrete, fibre cement, plaster board, timber flooring;
three of – tile, acoustic membrane, butyl rubber, rendered surface, cork tile,
metal, glass, painted surface, plastic.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Surfaces for preparation are identified and checked for compliance with
specifications.
Range

2.2
Actions taken in the event that surfaces are not compliant with specifications
are in accordance with work site practice.
2.3
Any work of other trades is identified and protected against damage from tiling
operations.
2.4
Method used for preparing surfaces meets the requirements for surface
condition, location, and tile type.
2.5
Surface is prepared to a finish suitable for application of tiles in accordance with
specifications.
2.6
Site is protected against run-off in accordance with legislation, and surfaces are
cleaned in accordance with job and site requirements.

Complete work operations.
Evidence requirements
3.1
All operations are safely completed; workplace, tools, plant and equipment are
cleaned; and tools, plant and equipment are stored in accordance with work site
practice.
