This unit standard covers selection and installation of electric
switchboards in domestic or commercial buildings. It is
intended for people wishing to qualify as electricians.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:

select electric switchboards; and
–
install electric switchboards.

This unit standard has been developed for learning and assessment on-job.

Achievement of this unit standard does not by itself imply that trainees may legally
perform prescribed electrical work in their own right. Until they are registered and
licensed under the Electricity Act 1992, trainees are assisting, and must work under
the supervision of a Supervisor of Electrical Work when carrying out prescribed
electrical work. If the prescribed electrical work in question is carried out for reward
the Supervisor of Electrical Work must hold a valid practising licence.

Definitions
The term current regulations and standards is used in this unit standard to refer to
the requirements of the above references.
The term safe and sound practice relating to the installation of electrical equipment is
defined in AS/NZS 3000:2007.

Range
a Demonstration of safe working practices and installation in accordance with safe
and sound practice are essential components of assessment of this unit standard.
b Competency must be demonstrated on at least one main multiple earth neutral
(MEN) switchboard and one distribution board.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Select electric switchboards.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Selection of switchboards meets the electrical and switchgear requirements as
determined from drawings and client consultation.
Range
1.2
requirements include but are not limited to – number and size of
cable entries; number, size, and mounting of circuit breakers,
switches, and other devices; earth and neutral bar size and current
rating; separate compartments for control and metering equipment
where applicable; requirements for doors and locks.
Selection of switchboards matches environmental requirements according to
current regulations and standards.
Range
environmental requirements may include but are not limited to –
fire-proofing, metallic enclosures, restrictions regarding the
location above a cooking appliance, damp situations, dusty
atmospheres, outdoors, domestic locations, commercial locations,
industrial locations, hazardous areas.

Install electric switchboards.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Installation meets the requirements of current regulations and standards, and
energy supplier requirements.

2.2
requirements include but are not limited to – height above ground,
distance from floor to main switch, window height for meter board,
locations where switchboard may not be installed.
Installation of components is according to drawings where available, and
manufacturer’s instructions.

Installation includes termination of cable looms, fitting of cover plates, and
labelling.

Installation meets client requirements.

Switchboard is left clean and prepared for testing and commissioning.
